indian ocean tsunami alert lifted after earthquake

Two earthquakes hit it the coast of indonesia's aceh province but the alert of tsunami was cancelled, fortunatelly.
I have to recognize that the earthquakes don't scare me, in the last one (27/F) my parents were in home, my brothers in their homes and my boyfriend too, that was good, but in the future could happen other hearthquake and could be different. We  live in a country very special, in our history chile had been hit for it, for example in Valdivia, part of it disappeared.
We have to be careful, maybe collect water, buy flashlights and batteries. Some specialists talked about dicember of 2012, they said could be horrible, because there are countries that have advanced technologies that can provoke strong hearthquake in some countries, like chile.

task 2, Will we ever... talk to the animals?

May be, to talk like humans, I think.... no.
But we can communicate with them through signals and different sounds, I think ... yes!!!. but we have to note that comunication could be created but with a specific meaning for example, in linguistic, we saw something related with this topic, "animals and human language", inside of unit we have "displacement" I take one part of it; "When your pet cat comes home and stands at your feet calling meow, you are likely to understand this message as relating to that immediate time and place. If you ask your cat where it has been and what it was up to, you’ll probably get the same meow response. Animal communication seems to be designed exclusively for this moment, here and now. It cannot effectively be used to relate events that are far removed in time and place. When your dog says GRRR, it means GRRR, right now, because dogs don’t seem to be capable of communicating GRRR, last night, over in the park. In contrast, human language users are normally capable of producing messages equivalent to GRRR, last night, over in the park, and then going on to say In fact, I’ll be going back tomorrow for some more. Humans can refer to past and future time. This property of human language is called displacement."
That will be the big different between humans and animals communication.

understanding purpose and register

Having decided that a text is reliable, a student must read and understand as much as necessary for the needs of the essay. Understanding a text is not just a matter of vocabulary; the reader needs to find out the writer's intentions. Is the writer aiming to inform, persuade, describe or entertain? The anwer to this question may affect the way a student  used  the material.

Selecting key point

After selecting or understanding the most relevant texts, the next step is usually to make notes on the section of the text that relate to your topic.

For example, identify the key points in the text for your purpose:

WHY WOMEN LIVE LONGER

Despite the overall increase in life expectancy in Britain over the past century, women still live significantly longer than men. In fact, in 1900 men could expect to live to 49 and women to 52, a difference of three years, while now the figures are 74 and 79, which shows that the gap has increased to five years. Various reasons have been suggested for this situation , such as the possibility that men may die earlier because they take more risks. But a team of British scientists have recently found a likely answer in the immune system, which protects the body from diseases. The thymus is the organ which produces the T cells which actually combat illnesses. Although both sexes suffer from deterioration of the thymus as they age, women appear to have more T cells in their bodies than men of the same age. It is this, the scientists believe, that gives women better protection from potentially fatal diseases such as influenza and pneumonia.
Having selected these sections of the text, you can then go on to make notes from them:
British women live longer than men: 79/74
reasons? new research suggests immune system > thymus > T cells
women have more T cells than men = better protection

Note-making

Effective note-making is a key writing skill, with a number of practicals uses. Good note-making techniques lead to accurate essays. Although you are the only person who will read your notes, clarity and organisation are still important.

What are the main reasons to note-making?
to me are:
a) to avoid plagiarism.
b) to create a main idea.
c) to review several times.
d) to organiize the main purpose to a future investigation.

Effective note-making is part of a sequence:

40 PERCENT OF CHILEAN BETWEEN.....

Chile has the highest percentage of teenage smoke in the world (13 to 15 years old). The reason maybe is the thinking of "can make feel like adult" or "that give more prestige".
I think the problem is that smoking doesn't has social level, in pubblic and privates schools, the smokers students do it in parties or in the street in some cases hidden in the school, where they aren't supervising. I'm agree with the sentence "can make me feel like adult" because in this period of their life they want to emancipate, to live apart, without rules and restritions from anybody and the cigarette is the beginning of that revelion.
Consequently, that generation is growing. I can imagine, if the actual situation is terrible to the person than doesn't smoked, in the future all of us we could be affected with cancer. the passive smoker are the real loser in this problem they smoke twice when is next to a direct smoker.
